The current long-term urban development strategy identifies the future of Népsziget in increasing the proportion of areas supporting recreation and water tourism, providing promising development potential for this area, which currently shows signs of neglect in many parts. The 42-hectare peninsula, running along the Danube between Angyalföld and Újpest and connected to Palotai Island, has an adventurous history. Originally completely surrounded by the Danube, the area was connected to Újpest via a narrow land bridge at Zsilip Street in the 1830s. This decision led to the creation of a winter harbor in the Újpest Bay, where the Pesti and Fiumei Shipyard established facilities, and the Ganz Danubius Ship and Crane Factory settled in the eastern bay. A new milestone in local industrialization was the construction of the railway bridge in 1896, which did not deter citizens from using the western side of Népsziget as a popular public beach until the 1970s. Access was facilitated by the railway bridge, which allowed pedestrians on the south side and cyclists/motorcyclists on the north side. Népsziget became significant competition for the Római Part.

A Duna angyalföldi és újpesti partszakasza mentén húzódó, a Palotai-szigettel összenőtt 42 hektáros félszigetnek egészen kalandos a története. Ahogy a nevéből is sejthető, a Népszigetet eredetileg teljesen körbe ölelte a Duna. Az 1830-as évek Magyarországán azonban egészen máshogy álltak hozzá a szigetekhez, mint manapság Dubajban, ezért a területet Újpesthez kapcsolták hozzá egy keskeny földnyelvvel a Zsilip utcánál. Az egyértelműen funkcionális okokra visszavezethető döntéssel egy téli kikötő is létrejött az Újpesti-öbölben, a parton üzemet alakított ki a Pesti és Fiumei Hajógyár, a keleti öbölben pedig a Ganz Danubius Hajó- és Darugyár telepedett le. A lokális iparosodás újabb mérföld köve volt az 1896-ban megépült vasúti híd, ám ez sokakat sokáig nem zavart abban, hogy forró nyári napokon itt keressenek enyhülést a Dunában: a Népsziget nyugati oldalán egészen a múlt század 70-es éveiig működött városszerte népszerű szabadstrand. Az odajutást nagyban megkönnyítette, hogy a vasúti híd déli oldalát gyalogosok használhatták, az északin pedig kerékpárral és motorkerékpárral is lehetett közlekedni - természetesen oldalkocsi nélkül.
